WHAT'S UP Curt covered the things to watch for in the sky over the month.
 
OBSERVING Adrien doing early morning observing for his Explore the Universe certificate; Adrien, Peter and Curt did sidewalk observing at Market Square before the meeting; Curt and Adrien did a session for Silly Frogs diabetic group at Saints Rest; Dave B. observed Saturn in early morning; Myrtle was watching Venus; Curt saw 16 Geminids over 75 minutes.
 
SHOW AND TELL Peter had a book "Shrouds of Night," Adrien had a planisphere from Firefly
 
FAMOUS OBSERVATORY Peter discussed the James Webb Space Telescope to be launched in 2011 to L2 Earth orbit on Ariane 5 rocket; named for NASA Administrator in 1960's; Observes infrared, looking for first light after Big Bang, first formation of galaxies, black hole formation in galaxies, and birth of stars and planetary systems. Its berylium mirror is in 19 segments, and scope is initially folded and will unfold in space (animation shown).
 
EARLY TELESCOPES Early Telescopes - Peter showed a presentation from IYA site in the invention of the telescope.
BUSINESS Club Scope - Ed Woods, PST (Curt). The Cosmic Perspective (Ed K.). Destiny in Space DVD (Roy H.), Backyard Astronomer's Guide (?); Mars book (Shawn); Curt gave a summary of IYA 2009 plans with the museum, library, art club, and observing.
